Movement becomes static...

The concept of movement being captured and translated as a static image is quite mind provoking and very surreal.

Although my nephew (art director of the day!) was jumping i still managed to keep the camera in focus. I am thrilled with the outcome - it is so much sharper than i anticipated.

To Update

Over the past week i have been busy with freelance collaborations, which i am thoroughly enjoying!

The Creative Cumbria team, myself included, are looking forward to the first Moleskine exchange on the 31st May. Some of the first entries have already been uploaded to the blog and are really worth a look!

I have also submitted my entry for Oddinary (image in earlier post), by which the closing date was today.

I will be adding a new post of current projects very soon...

Dubai Exhibition Project II

This is my second entry for the exhibition collaboration piece with Vivek.

My inspiration was drawn from gambling chips, playing games of chance for money.

Vector for A1 poster:

"If you're broke, then you buy it."

Now it is over to Vivek, to add his illustrative touch to the work.

"Icons of Graphic Design"

Publication by Steven Heller & Mirko Ilic.

Yesterday i received confirmation from Mirko Ilic Corp. a New York-based graphic studio, to say that my work has been published in their new edition of "Icons of Graphic Design." It is an honor to have my work selected by Steven Heller & Mirko Ilic, both whom i admire greatly. I am lost for words and amazed to be within a publication which showcases the talents of the designers, past and present, i hold in high regard, from Toulouse-Lautrec, Milton Glaser, Peter Saville to Michel Gondry.

A big thank you to all who made this possible.

"Icons of Graphic Design presents a unique history of design, documenting over a century of creative brilliance...Showcasing the most influential designs and designers from 1900 to the present, this outstanding collection illustrates how the best ideas perpetuate themselves over time, one great concept inspiring the next."

Lomography Take-2!

After having little look with my first lomography reel, i am please that my 2nd reel has actually came out with some relatively well balanced exposures. Learning from past experiences, not much lighting means under-exposure even if the built in flash is on, i ensured that all my new snaps were taken in full natural daylight.

Slowly i am becoming more confident, judging the subject and it's distance. Although i admit, when it comes to the Lomography Fisheye 2 camera i have a lot to learn!

Dubai Exhibition Project

A collaboration project with Vivek.

Photographic experimentation for the first A1 poster design:

"Hallucination is just a visual dyslexia."
Vivek

The initial concept, to play with the ideas of perception via visual representation. Adding the notion of surgical illness to the concept of visual dyslexia and adding a multi-dimensional impact incorporating many levels of visual communication. By adding the clip to the design as a three dimensional letter form only adds to the drama of the piece and will enable lots of visual play. The next step is to illustrate around the 'a' of the 'hallucination.'

UPDATED 14th May '08: The above exploration has been featured on the amazing Ventilate, a website which discovers and showcases all the latest innovative visuals and conceptual projects.

"Sarah France is doing some cool stuff with Design & Typography. Pay a visit to her blog, she’s really nice!"
Jason Doherty

A big thank you to Jason.

UPDATED 16th May '08: The full typographic treatment, exp. 1.

This is the more structured style (select image for larger view).

Tonally, hallucination could do with being darker to take your eye to the beginning of the quote. I may suggest to Vivek to add more subtle graphics to also enhance this. All in all, i feel it has the desired effect and works well with the 3 Dimensional A of the clip. This design has now been submitted to Vivek, it will be fascinating to see how he applies the finishing touches to this collaboration.

Neon

Although i adore black and white, i find the appeal of neon colours invigorating. So fresh and modernistic, i aim to explore this further through photographic methods and hope to progress into some typographic work.

3d Illusion

Still learning along the way, the website design is coming on. By producing my showcase it has enabled me to distinguish a style using typographical hierarchy and a clean visual presentation, this approach allows the work to speak for itself.

Still working on a header for the website, i have created my first successful piece of 3D work through line art alone. I am not sure at the moment as to whether the initial concept of a 'reflecting' header will work, but the experimentation is all worth while and of course as to whether the design idea is too distracting.

Visual Illusion

Experimentation for my new website header.

I would like the graphic and headline, 'a reflection of self,' to visual appear as if it is moving in a sense of reflection - subtly - without using technology but a strong researched structure giving the impression of 'magic eye.'

Below are pieces of experimentation. Currently researching works by Bridget Riley.

Another experiment, are the lines sloping?

Extreme Machines...

Watching a documentary on Extreme Machines inspired this piece. Will Robots one day take over the world? For now i think not...but technology has gone as far as them mimicing our movements and balance. The Honda ASIMO humanoid robot is the most outstanding functional piece of engineering, technology has evolved from 6 Robotic legs to the human equivalent of 2...so on that note, i am not a robot!

For the world wide moleskine exchange project.
